Metabolism of Acid Mucopolysaccharides in the Shwartzman Phenomenon
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effect of the Shwartzman phenomenon on the metabolism of the acid mucopolysaccharides (MPS), hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, from rabbits with localized lesions was studied. Quantitative changes of MPS were observed by two techniques-the in vivo incorporation of glucose C(14) into the MPS and the in vitro dilution of C(14)-labeled MPS. The results indicate an increased concentration of both MPS fractions in the skin lesions and suggest an increased biosynthesis of the compounds at the site of the lesions. Deposition of chondroitin sulfate from blood may have contributed in part to the concentration of this substance in the lesions. The MPS contribute to the inflammatory state of the Shwartzman phenomenon but the specific roles of these compounds need to be defined by further study.

Metabolism of Acid Mucopolysaccharides in the Shwartzman Phenomenon* by Gerald
The two-stage inflammatory state observed by Sanarelli (1) and by Shwartzman (2) is considered an interesting, although not entirely understood, reaction of tissue. The reaction localized to skin, referred to as the Shwartzman phenomenon, represents a special type of inflammatory change, one requiring "preparation" of tissue by intracutaneous injection, usually of an endotoxin from Gram-negativ...
متن کاملThe Metabolism of Mucopolysaccharides in Animals
The turnover of the acid mucopolysaccharides, hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitinsulfuric acid (CSA), of skin has been studied in normal rats (1) and in animals treated with the adrenocortical hormones, 17-hydroxycorticosterone and 11-dehydro-17-hydroxycorticosterone (2). It was shown that the administration of these adrenal steroids to otherwise normal rats resulted in a decreased turnover of...
متن کاملInhibition of the Shwartzman Phenomenon
The Shwartzman phenomenon can be inhibited by an intravenous injection of a potent bacterial filtrate within a few hours before or after the preparatory intradermal injection. The inhibitory effect is produced non-specifically by filtrates potent in the elicitation of the Shwartzman phenomenon, and it is of a transitory nature. The relation of the observation described to anaphylactic desensiti...
متن کاملPlatelets and the Shwartzman Phenomenon
Studies are reported on the effect of immunologically induced thrombocytopenia upon the local and generalized Shwartzman phenomena. Intravenous injection of antiplatelet serum to rabbits produced profound but transient thrombocytopenia unaccompanied by significant changes in circulating leucocytes. Platelet antiserum alone given to rabbits prepared with thorotrast produced renal lesions charact...
متن کاملStudies on the Mechanism of the Shwartzman Phenomenon
The inhibition of the Shwartzman phenomenon by nitrogen mustard and benzene has been confirmed and investigated further. This inhibition can be correlated with the leucopenia induced by these agents. Evidence is presented indicating that polymorphonuclear leucocytes play an essential role in the preparation of the skin for the Shwartzman phenomenon.
